NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware erased a 10-point halftime deficit and held league-leading UNCW to just five second half field goals en route to a 70-59 Colonial Athletic Association victory Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Sophomore guard Cazmon Hayes dropped in 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half,
Marvin King-Davis added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Kyle Anderson (below right) chipped in with 11 points to lead Delaware (8-18, 7-8 CAA) to its second straight victory.
UNCW (15-11, 10-5 CAA), which entered the game in first place in the CAA standings a half-game ahead of William & Mary and Northeastern, had a two-game win streak snapped. Delaware avenged a 74-73 overtime loss at UNCW back on Jan. 8.
Delaware outscored the Seahawks 45-24 in the second half to rally from a 35-25 halftime deficit. UNCW hit just one field goal over the first 14 minutes of the second half and finished the night hitting just 34.5 percent of its shots from the field (19 of 55), including 5 of 24 shooting (20.8 percent) during the second stanza.
“This was a really good win, and I couldn't be prouder of the guys,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We wanted to make them shoot over us and make contested jumpers. Eric Carter and Anthony Mosley (at left) gave us some big minutes off the bench. In conference play we need other guys to step up, and those guys did that tonight."
Craig Ponder led four UNCW players in double figures with 14 points while Dylan Sherwood came off the bench to add 12 points and Freddie Jackson had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Delaware, which shot 65.2 percent from the field (15 of 23) in the second half, has now defeated the CAA leader in three of its last four games. The Hens have also downed UNCW seven straight times at home.
The Hens trailed by 10 at the half and still were down 40-31 two minutes into the second half before embarking on a 17-2 run that gave them a 48-42 lead with 10:57 left.
The Seahawks never got closer than seven points the rest of the evening and when they did at 60-53 with 4:22 remaining, the Hens responded by scoring seven straight points to put the game away.
