NEWARK, Del. -- Just two days after knocking off league-leading UNCW, the talented but young Blue Hens stumbled on Saturday afternoon as the University of Delaware rallied to force overtime but could not keep up in the extra session and dropped an 83-75 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball decision to Elon at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (8-19, 7-9 CAA), which had a two-game win streak snapped, celebrated Senior Day and got
big efforts from veterans Kyle Anderson and Marvin King-Davis (at right), but the Hens never gained the lead in overtime and were outscored 9-1 by the Phoenix in that extra session.
Anderson (bottom left), the team's lone active senior, led all Delaware scorers with 18 points and added four assists while King-Davis, a junior athletically who will graduate this spring, recorded his second career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Freshman Chivarsky Corbett gave the Hens a big second-half lift and finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers, off the bench while Cazmon Hayes contributed 14 points. Kory Holden dished out seven assists.
“We weren't able to pull it out today, but our guy left everything on the line,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “They came back from eight down in regulation and I'm supposed to pull them through overtime, and I didn't do that. I didn't put them in the best positions in overtime, so this loss is squarely on my shoulders.”
League newcomer Elon (12-17, 4-12 CAA), which entered the game tied for last place in the CAA, had a seven-game losing streak snapped. The Phoenix also placed four scorers in double figures as
Kevin Blake led the way with 18 points, including 17 in the second half, and Tanner Samson and Austin Hamilton each added 16 points with Hamilton also dishing out nine assists.
Elijah Bryant contributed 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds and knocked down four free throws in overtime.
Elon, which knocked down 13 three-pointers for the game, including 6 of 11 in the second half, is just 2-11 over its last 13 games this season but both wins came over Delaware as the Phoenix won 94-82 at home back on Jan. 24.
The Hens led by as many as 11 points early in the game before Elon rallied and cut the UD margin to 38-36 at halftime.
The Phoenix led for most of the second half, going up by as many as eight points in the second half at 67-59 with 6:15 left. But Corbett gave the Hens a big lift as he knocked down two three-pointers in the final 4:21 and sent the game into overtime with a layup at the 27-second mark.
Elon dominated the overtime session as the Phoenix held Delaware to 0 for 8 shooting from the field while knocking down 6 of 7 free throws.
