AMBLER, Pa. – Blue Hens freshman Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) notched two victories, but Saint Joseph's University topped the University of Delaware, 6-1, Friday evening at the Upper Dublin Sports Center.
Jeffray and sophomore Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) registered their second straight win in top flight doubles with an 8-6 victory over Pierre Brondeau and Andres Urrea.
Jeffray then picked up a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win against Brondeau in No. 2 singles.
Fellow freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) nearly pulled out his own singles victory, but fell to Urrea, 5-7, 6-3, 10-3, in No. 3 singles.
With the loss, Delaware falls to 0-7 on the year while the Hawks improve to 3-2 overall.
“This was a hard-fought match of which the final score is not representative. If a few deuce points and a tiebreaker go the other way, we come out with a win. Tim [Puterio] and Shane [Jeffray] are on the beginning of what could be a long win streak. They are giving us a chance in every doubles point and we are going to do our best to help them bring the next one home.”
