PHILADELPHIA -- Kyle Anderson scored a game-high 16 points and the University of Delaware men's basketball team shut down Drexel as the Blue Hens posted a 58-44 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Dragons Thursday night at the Daskalakis Center.
Delaware (9-19, 8-9 CAA), which won its third consecutive road game, moved into a tie for sixth place in the CAA standings along with the Dragons (10-18, 8-9 CAA). If the Blue Hens defeat Towson on Saturday or Drexel falls at William & Mary, Delaware will earn the sixth seed and a first round bye in next weekend's CAA Tournament in Baltimore.
Anderson went 6 of 11 from the field as he reached double figures for the 11th straight game and moved into 14th place on the UD career scoring list with 1,272 points.
Maurice Jeffers added 10 points and nine rebounds for Delaware, while Kory Holden contributed nine points while handing out eight assists and not committing a turnover.
Drexel, which was playing without CAA leading scorer Damion Lee as well as reserve guard Sammy Mojica and had only seven players in uniform, received 12 points from Freddie Wilson and 11 each from Mohamed Bah and Rashann London.
However the Dragons shot just 30.3 percent from the field including 3 of 18 from three-point range, and made only 7 of 32 field goal attempts in the second half.
Delaware, which has now won three straight meetings at Drexel for the first since a six-game winning streak from 1966-72 through 1971-72, allowed its fewest points since giving up 43 to Towson on Jan. 23, 2012.
“Obviously we're thrilled to get this win tonight,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We understand the circumstances Drexel played with, and clearly that played a big role in the game. But in February, every win is a good win. We wanted to have a mature approach tonight, and I thought we were really sharp at the start of the game.”
The game was tight early on before consecutive three-pointers by Anderson and Chivarsky Corbett put the Blue Hens in front 18-11 eight minutes into the contest.
Delaware eventually went up by as many as 11 in the opening stanza but the Dragons would stay within striking distance, as UD took a 35-28 lead into the break.
Bah converted a three-point play early in the second half to make it a six-point game but the Blue Hens would pull away from there, as Anderson intercepted a pass and went the length of the court for a dunk to put UD up 46-34 with 16 minutes to play.
Delaware led by double figures the rest of the way, going in front 54-36 at the 11:23 mark on a three-pointer by Corbett. The advantage eventually grew to 20 at 58-38 and although the Blue Hens went scoreless over the final 6:21, Drexel mustered just six points in that span to account for the final margin.
“We wanted to be the tougher team tonight,” Holden stated. “Coach emphasized pushing the ball, so that's what we did along with playing good defense.”
Hen Scratchings:
• Drexel lost its fourth straight game
• The road team has now won the last four games in the series
• Barnett Harris set a career-high with nine rebounds
• Drexel attempted just two free throws, as the teams combined for only 20 fouls
