PETAL, Miss. -- The University of Delaware softball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Memphis, 6-4, before dropping a 12-4 decision to Ole Miss.
Delaware (5-4) opened the scoring against Memphis by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Heather Oakley hit a sacrifice fly to chase home Jessica Grisler before Mariah Kondravy blasted a two-run homer. The Tigers (3-6) got on the board in the second on an RBI single by Sami Jo Schulz, and made it a 3-2 game in the fifth when Kyler Trosclair scored on a wild pitch.
But Delaware would answer in the bottom half with three more runs, increasing the margin to 6-2. Leanna Gearhart led off the frame with an infield single, and eventually crossed the plate of a wild pitch. Later in the frame Sarah Bencivenga singled home Grisler, while she came around to score when Kondravy singled up the middle.
Memphis scored twice in the top of the seventh, but Jordan Cargile came in to retire the final two batters of the game to secure the victory and pick up her third save of the year. Carolyn Szymanski gave up four runs, three earned, with seven strikeouts to earn her fourth win of the campaign.
Kondravy finished 3 for 3 with three RBI for the Blue Hens, while Bencivenga was 2 for 2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.
During Delaware's second game of the day, Ole Miss (7-4) scored a run in the bottom of the first before taking control with four runs in the second. Paige McKinney laced an RBI double in the frame for the Rebels, while Allison Brown doubled home two more as Ole Miss went in front by five.
The Rebels tacked on a run in the third on an Alex Schneider homer, before UD pinch runner Mattie Nuccio scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to put the Blue Hens on the board. Following two more runs for Ole Miss in the bottom half, Oakley belted a three-run home run in the fifth to make it an 8-4 game. However the Rebels came right back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, ending the game due to the mercy rule.
UD starting pitcher Kiersten Coffman dropped her first decision of the season after allowing three runs on five hits in one inning of work.
