LEXINGTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware baseball team was unable to tally a win Friday as the Blue Hens were swept by George Mason and NJIT at the Lexington County Tournament.
The Patriots downed Delaware 12-4 in game one, while the Highlanders bested the Hens 5-2 in game two of the twin-bill.
Jim ShermanIn game one, the Blue Hens dug themselves a six-run hole and, despite a three-run fifth inning, were unable to climb out.
Senior Adam Davis made his second start of the season and was credited with the loss. Davis gave up six earned runs on eight hits in four innings pitched. The righty faced 25 batters and tallied four strikeouts on the day.
The Patriots (2-5) drew first blood in the second inning on a Kent Blackstone solo home run. George Mason then scored at least one run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a commanding lead.
UD trailed 6-0 heading into the fifth inning, before the Blue Hens got on the scoreboard with a Jeremy Ake two-run home run. Ty Warrington then added another run on a solo shot to cut the George Mason lead in half.
After Mason added to its lead in the fifth, Delaware answered with a Tyler Powell RBI single to pull the Hens within three runs, but that would be as close as the Blue Hens would get as the Patriots would break the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
George Mason's sixth inning scoring began with a Tyler Nelin two-run home run and the inning was capped by a bases-clearing three-RBI double from Brady Acker.
In game two, the Blue Hens (1-3) again fell behind early. NJIT scored a run in the first and then put a three-spot on the board in the fourth inning.
The Blue Hens then answered with a Gary Jones solo home run and an RBI single from Doug Trimble. After four innings UD trailed 4-2, but it was unable to score another run.
Highlander starting pitcher Joe Fasano kept the Delaware hitters off-balance as he struck out 11 batters in six innings of work. Tyler Kapp then pitched four scoreless innings to close out the game and earn his second save of the season.
The Hens tallied 10 hits, which was one more than NJIT, but could not convert opportunities as they left 13 total runners on base in the game.
Sophomore Chad Martin only allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out nine in six innings, but was credited with his first loss of the year.
The Blue Hens will return to action Saturday as UD faces Canisius at 3:30 p.m. Ron Marinaccio is expected to make his first career start for Delaware.
