TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team rallied from a six-point deficit with seven minutes remaining to post a 65-60 comeback victory over Towson Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.
The Blue Hens (10-19, 9-9 Colonial Athletic Association), who won their fourth consecutive road game, earned the No. 6 seed in next week's CAA Tournament at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore. Delaware will take on Northeastern at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Kory Holden led the Blue Hens with a game-high 17 points, including four clutch free throws in the final 23 seconds of the contest. Maurice Jeffers contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, while Marvin King-Davis posted his second double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Walter Foster had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers, who dropped their fourth straight game and seventh of their last eight.
John Davis also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while Mike Morsell and Four McGlynn added 11 points apiece.
King-Davis hit two free throws to put the Blue Hens in front 47-44, before Bryon Hawkins drained a three-pointer and McGlynn added a pair of triples to give Towson its largest lead of the day at 53-47 with seven minutes to play.
But Delaware would answer with a crucial 13-2 spurt, going back ahead 60-55 with two minutes on the clock. Holden then hit two free throws with 23 seconds to play, and after the Tigers again closed within three, the freshman put the game away with another pair of foul shots with four seconds to go.
“This was a really hard-fought game, every time we play Towson it's nip and tuck,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We were really tough today, and that's the only way we were going to come out with a victory. We got down six but our guys never panicked; I was really proud of our execution down the stretch. For our team to get to .500 in the league is a great accomplishment, based on where we started.”
Towson used a six-point run to go in front 17-10 eight minutes into the contest, but Delaware battled back and finally went in front 24-23 on a Jeffers dunk at the 3:24 mark.
Jeffers converted another dunk the final minute to put the Blue Hens up four, before Hawkins buried a late three-pointer to cut UD's margin to 31-30 at the half.
Neither team led by more than four for the first 13 minutes of the second half before Towson's spurt put the Tigers up six, but the Blue Hens rallied back for the win.
“It's big for us to finish 9-6 in the league after starting 0-3, so we can avoid playing on the first day of the tournament,” Anderson stated. “When we're playing at our best we can beat anyone, so that gives us a lot of confidence heading into the tournament.”
Game Notes:
• UD has now finished .500 or better in league play for the fourth straight year
• Towson had its two-game home winning streak vs. Delaware snapped
• Anderson had his 11-game double figure scoring streak halted
• Anthony Mosley contributed three points, three steals, and two assists for UD
