RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware redshirt freshman midfielder Will Hirschmann, who led the Blue Hens to an 18-6 victory over Holy Cross last Tuesday, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 8, the league announced Tuesday.
Hirschmann, an economics major from Edgewater, Md. (Archbishop Spalding High School), became the second UD player to be honored this season as faceoff specialist Matt Olbrich was cited as the CAA Rookie of the Week back on Feb. 9.
A member of the team's No. 2 midfield unit, Hirschmann led the Blue Hens (3-4) to a 1-1 week as Delaware routed Holy Cross 18-6 on Tuesday before falling to Binghamton 11-7 on Sunday. Both games were played at Delaware Stadium.
Hirschmann scored a goal, dished out an assist, and picked up a groundball in the win over Holy Cross and then tallied a season-high two goals in the setback to Binghamton.
For the season, Hirschmann has played in all six games and ranks sixth on the team with eight points on six goals and two assists. He also has recorded a groundball and a team-high three man-up goals.
In addition to Hirschmann, Drexel senior midfielder Ryan Belka was honored as the CAA Player of the Week.
Delaware will continue its seven-game homestand this Saturday when the Blue Hens host Rutgers (2-5) at Delaware Stadium at 12 noon as part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The Delaware women will host Temple at 3 p.m.
