Blue Hens Kick Off UD Invitational With 7-5 Victory Over Delaware State

NEWARK, Del. -- Four Blue Hens knocked out two hits apiece as the University of Delaware softball team opened its home schedule with a 7-5 victory over Delaware State Friday afternoon during the first game of the UD Invitational.
Delaware, which improved to 10-6 on the year, jumped in front by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Grisler led off with a single, and after she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, she scored on a single by Sarah Bencivenga. Mariah Kondravy then singled home Bencivenga, while later in the frame Danielle Wissinger delivered a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game.
The Hornets, who fell to 1-12 this season, got on the board in the top of the second when Khaliyah Flournory singled home Jordan Stamps, before DSU added three runs in the third to knot the contest at 4-4. Sandy Hawthorne worked a bases loaded walk, and after Vanessa Washington scored on a wild pitch, Rochelle Sablay doubled home a run to pull Delaware State even.
However the Blue Hens would go right back in front during the bottom of the frame, as with two outs Leanna Gearhart stroked a single to right field, driving home Mattie Nuccio and Giovanna Kolofer. Delaware tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Lisa Stacevicz singled and came around to score on a double off the fence by Bencivenga.
Washington blasted a solo home run in the seventh to again make it a two-run game, and Delaware State put the tying runners on base following two-out singles by Stamps and Sablay, but Blue Hen relief pitcher Jordan Cargile got Flournory to ground out to end the game.
Cargile improved to 2-1 in the circle after allowing just one run on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. Grisler, Stacevicz, Bencivenga and Kondravy each finished with two hits for the Blue Hens, while Grisler now has an even 200 hits for her career.
