UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Hofstra University capitalized on a poor first half from the University of Delaware women's basketball team to defeat the Blue Hens, 45-42, Saturday evening in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals at The Show Place Arena.
No. 7 seed Delaware, which finishes the season with a mark of 15-17, shot just 20 percent on 5-of-25 shooting from the
field in the first and finished the game with an overall mark of .275 (14-of-51).
Hofstra held a 27-16 lead at the break and never trailed in the second half. The third-seeded Pride (20-11), who will take on top seed and defending champion James Madison in Sunday's championship final, also outrebounded Delaware, 43-37, including an advantage of 30-12 at halftime.
Junior Courtni Green (at left; Winchester, Va./Millbrook) registered a game-high 14 points off of three 3-pointers and five free throws. Green added three rebounds and three steals for the Hens.
All-CAA second team sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J/Paterson Kennedy) collected 10 points while senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) contributed nine points, six rebounds, an assist and blocked shot.
Elo Edeferioka tallied a double double of 12 points and 16 rebounds with four blocks for Hofstra (20-11).
Delaware, which had swept the season series from Hofstra with victories of 64-53 at home on Jan. 15 and 73-62 in Hempstead, N.Y. on Feb. 1, was looking to advance to the CAA title game for the fifth straight year.
Hofstra led by 11 points early in the second half before Delaware chipped away and pulled to within 33-30 on a jumper by Brown with 12:05 left.
But the Pride pulled ahead again and was still up by nine points at 41-32 before the Blue Hens made one last run. Green converted a three-pointer with 2:48 remaining to narrow the deficit to 45-42, but neither team scored again.
Delaware had the chance to tie the game just before the final buzzer but Green's off-balance three-point attempt under pressure was way off the mark.
Tina Martin“It's frustrating because our kids fought so hard. They gave a lot of effort and didn't quit, even when we were down double digits. Hofstra rebounded the ball really well and were all over us in the first half. We just didn't shoot well enough in the end. It's disappointing, but I'm proud of the kids. This team has bounced through a lot of adversity this year. We really came around during the end of the year and played with a sense of urgency. We did not hang our heads.”
Senior Joy Caracciolo (at right)
“There have been a lot of ups and downs this season, but this weekend we really battled and came together as a team to fight and try to win a championship.”
