CHANDLER, Ariz. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad continues to be acknowledged for its dedication to academics as the Blue Hens have two student-athletes honored as Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction.
Sophomore Fran Orella (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) was selected for the second consecutive season while freshman Maggie Delp (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) earned the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
The duo are two of 10 student-athletes from the Colonial Athletic Association and two of 79 total NCAA Division I student-athletes chosen for this high honor.
Rolf van de KerkhofIn just its second year of existence, the Scholars of Distinction recognizes student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year, which is the heart of the championship field hockey season.
“Our program is very proud of Fran for being a returning Scholar of Distinction,” Van de Kerkhof commented. “Fran works extremely hard and makes every attempt to balance her student-athlete life and make contributions on the field.”
Van de Kerkhof continued, “We're also very excited for Maggie that her hard work continues to pay off in both the class room and on the field. She is very passionate about being a true-student athlete and she understands what it takes to create growth and success opportunities in both the academic and athletic arenas.”
Last week, Delaware was named a Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team for the fourth straight season. The award distinguishes those institutions who have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2014-15 academic year.
The Blue Hens finished the 2014 campaign with a record of 13-9 while picking up their second straight CAA title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
