Blue Hens Fall to Northeastern 3-2 in Extra Innings

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Despite a strong performance from the Blue Hen pitching staff, the University of Delaware baseball team fell to Northeastern 3-2 in 13 innings Friday in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup.
The Huskies (8-14, 1-3 CAA) clinched the win in the series-opener with a Maxwell Burt RBI single off UD reliever Kevin Milley.
Jim ShermanFor the fifth time in the last six games, the Hens (9-7, 2-2 CAA) were able to get on the board in the first inning when Donkin hit his team-leading third triple of the season to score Joe Giacchino.
Northeastern answered with a run in the third before Delaware took a 2-1 lead on a Diaz Nardo sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
The Huskies tied the game in the eighth inning with a home run from Ron Fonseca. Northeastern then loaded the bases, but Alicknavitch struck out Northeastern's Mason Koppens to quell the threat.
Donkin led the Blue Hens with three hits, while Giacchino and Zach Lopes each tallied two hits in the losing effort.
Davis put together another strong outing for UD as the senior allowed just two earned runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings of work. Alicknavitch surrendered just two hits and did not allow a run in 4.1 innings of relief.
Due to snow forecasted for tomorrow, Saturday's game has been postponed and the Hens and Huskies will now play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Friday was the first extra-inning game for Delaware this season.
· The last time the Hens went to extras, they defeated Delaware State 9-8 in 13 innings last season.
· Delaware and Northeastern went to extra innings twice last season.
· Lopes extended his hitting streak to nine games, while Nardo has now hit safely in eight consecutive game.
· Delaware now leads the all-time series vs. Northeastern 41-24.
· The Blue Hens recorded 11 hits, tied a season-high with three errors, and left nine runners on in Friday's game.
