NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware football team, in partnership with the UD Student Nurses Association, will host the seventh annual Be the Match bone marrow registry drive next Friday, Apr. 24.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Multipurpose Room C of the Trabant University Center. Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to attend the event, register, and help save a life.
Last year's event brought in over 400 registrations. Delaware has had four matches during the drives, including former Blue Hen football student-athletes Paul Worrilow, now a member of the NFL Atlanta Falcons, and Corey Olsen.
Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with blood related illnesses and they rely on the National Bone Marrow Registry to match them with donors to save their lives.
Entering the registry only requires some paper work and a simple mouth swab, which is less then a 20-minute process. For those who are matched with someone in the registry, a blood plasma donation is all it takes 75 percent of the time.
The Fightin' Blue Hens have entered more than 1,500 people in the National Bone Marrow Registry through the Get in the Game Save a Life program.
