NEWARK, Del. – For the second straight game, No. 22 College of Charleston demonstrated why it is among the nation's elite baseball teams as the Cougars defeated the University of Delaware, 8-3 Saturday in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt.
Jim ShermanLike game one, Charleston (27-8, 13-1 CAA) built an early lead on the Blue Hens. The Cougars notched a run in the first before putting up four runs in the third inning.
After the Cougars' barrage in the third, UD answered with a big inning of their own. The Hens scored three runs in the bottom half of the third on an RBI single from Zach Lopes and a two-run triple from Norm Donkin.
Blue Hen starter Ron Marinaccio was able to keep the Cougars at bay for most of the remainder of the game, but the Delaware bats could not get any more runs across the plate.
The Blue Hens (14-14, 3-8 CAA) had opportunities throughout the contest to threaten the Cougar lead, but could not take advantage.
The Hens had the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but Diaz Nardo struck out to end the threat. In the seventh inning, UD had runners on first and second when Lopes (right) attempted to take third base on a wild pitch, but Charleston catch Erven Roper benefited from a friendly hop and was able to gun down Lopes.
Marinaccio pitched eight innings, allowed eight runs on 10 hits, but only four of the runs he surrendered were earned. After the redshirt freshman allowed a pair of runs to score in the ninth, Luke Alicknavitch came on in relief and pitched the final inning.
Lopes and Donkin each tallied a pair of hits in the loss, while Ty Warrington, Nick Liggett, and Brock Niggebrugge supplied the other three hits for Delaware.
Charleston starter Brandon Glazer earned his seventh win of the season Saturday as the righty tossed six innings, allowed three runs on five hits, and struck out seven.
Delaware will look to salvage a win in the series tomorrow as the Blue Hens and Cougars square off in the final game of the three-game set. Chad Martin will take the mound for UD, while Wade Arduini will start the game for Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
