Dave Brock. “It's a great event, the kids have a lot of fun, and we feel very fortunate to be able to do it.”
The 80-member Smyrna High School Marching Band opened the football practice with the national anthem and entertained fans throughout the practice session with fight songs and popular music.
Over 200 boys and girls ages 4 and 12 registered for the free athletics skills fun which were conducted by members of the UD coaching staff and student-athletes.
“Any opportunity we have to come down here and play with the kids is great,” said Delaware junior All-American punter Eric Enderson, who worked with a group of 7-8 year-olds during the football skills session. “We had a blast. Our group came up with the name Crushing Bulldogs. We all had fun throwing and kicking the ball around and I think the parents had a good time too. It's really great to come down here and see the kids in the community and try to give a little back. Hopefully they will keep following us and get to a game this fall to support us.”
“Today was spectacular,” said Smyrna High School Associate Principal and 2003 UD football national championship team member Leon Clarke who helped organize the event. “We loved the turnout and we love the fact that we can have the Blue Hens come down and showcase what we are about here at Smyrna. The day was about family and about kids, our band was rocking, and the younger kids enjoyed all the skills camps. There was a lot of excitement not only from our Smyrna High School staff but from the entire
community today.”
Blue Hen fans should also mark their calendars for the annual Fandemonium VI that will be held on Saturday, May 2, as part of the annual football Blue-White Scrimmage at Delaware Stadium. This action-packed day with Blue Hens Athletics & Recreation includes the Fan Zone with live music, food, free pony rides for kids, inflatables, face painting, games, post-game autographs with members of the UD football team, and more.
The Delaware Beer Garden will once again be available in the Fan Zone for Blue Hens 21 and older. Parking lots open and Fan Zone activities begin at 10 a.m. with the spring scrimmage set for 12 noon. The Delaware Athletic Trainers Association 5K Run/1 Mile Walk will also take place that morning.
