Hens Squander Early Lead, Fall to James Madison 12-9

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware was unable to hold on to a six-run lead Friday as the Blue Hens fell to James Madison 12-9 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
Jim ShermanDelaware (10-11, 2-5 CAA) wasted no time in establishing an early lead against the Dukes as the Blue Hens scored six runs in the top of the first.
UD's barrage at the plate was highlighted by six hits including a pair of run scoring doubles from Norm Donkin and Diaz Nardo, and an RBI triple from Jeremy Ake.
After facing an early deficit, James Madison (11-16, 1-6 CAA) slowly chipped away at the Blue Hen lead. The Dukes answered UD's first inning scoring with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, and went on to score a run in seven of the eight innings they were at the plate.
Delaware built an 8-3 lead in the fourth inning before the Dukes scored a run in the fourth, added another two in the fifth, and tied the game in the sixth inning on a three-run home run from Brett Johnson.
The Dukes then scored one run in the seventh inning to take the lead and a two-RBI double from Michael Sciorra in the eighth gave JMU its 12-9 advantage.
Nardo and Warrington led the Blue Hens with three RBI, while Nardo also recorded a team-high three hits. Zach Lopes tallied two hits and Donkin posted two doubles in the loss.
Adam Davis started the game for UD and the senior allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings of work. The Delaware bullpen tossed 3.2 innings and gave up six runs, but only three of them were earned. Taylor Mahoney was credited with his first loss of the season.
First pitch of game two of the CAA series is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Chad Martin will get the start for the Hens, while JMU will send Aaron Hoover to the mound.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Eight of the nine batters in the UD lineup tallied at least one hit.
· Delaware committed a season-high four errors, including three errors in the seventh inning.
· UD has committed three or more errors in three of its last five games.
· Friday marked James Madison's first CAA victory of the season.
· The Blue Hens are now 1-6 on the road this season and 0-4 in CAA road games.
· Delaware's nine runs is the highest run total in a loss this season for the Hens.
