Delaware Track & Field in Third Place After First Day of CAA Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The defending Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field team collected three top three finishes and junior Latazah Coleman posted the top time in the 200 meter dash to highlight the first day of the CAA Women's Track & Field Championships Friday at William & Mary's Zable Stadium.
The second and final day of the meet will get underway Saturday at 9 a.m. The Blue Hens are looking
to repeat as league champions for the first time since 1991-92.
Host William & Mary took the first day lead with 78.5 points followed by Northeastern (42), and Delaware (25.5) in the eight-team field. UNCW is currently fourth followed by James Madison, Elon, Towson, and College of Charleston.
The Hens posted three top three finishes as sophomore Jade Francis (Connetquot/Islandia, N.Y.) was second in the hammer throw (163-4), senior Amira Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) was second in the long jump (19-3.5), and senior Monica Hagenauer (Parkland/Schnecksville, Pa.) was third in the hammer (156-11) for the second straight year.
Idris (at left) won the long jump title in 2014 and placed second in 2013. Francis' throw was a career-best by almost 13 feet.
Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.) ran the third fastest 200 meter time in school history with a clocking of 24.23 and was one of 10 UD runners to advance to Saturday's finals after top finishes in the preliminaries. She also advanced in the 100 meters where her time of 11.99 was fifth best.
Other top Blue Hens who advanced to Saturday's finals were junior Shanel Dickens (Cape Henlopen/Milton, Del.), who placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.17 that was the third fastest time in UD history. Sophomore Betsy Erlanger (Upper St. Clair/Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the fourth fastest time in the 1,500 meters trials with a time of 4:39.80.
Other Delaware runners who advanced to the finals were freshman Liz McGroarty (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, Pa.) in the 1,500 meters (fifth in 4:35.55) and 800 meters (fifth in 2:14.10); junior Chelsi Campbell (St. Joseph's Convent/Diego Martin, Trinidad) in the 400 meters (seventh in 58.20); sophomore Carolyn Darr (Penns Valley/Centre Hall, Pa.) in the 400 meters (eighth in 58.41); sophomore Ilana Schnaufer (Penfield/Rochester, N.Y.) in the 1,500 meters (11th in 4:40.82); and junior Erin McCloskey (Mt. de Sales/Columbia, Md.) in the 1,500 meters (12th in 4:42.58).
In addition, senior Hannah Pepper (Cape Henlopen/Lewes, Del.) is currently fifth in the pentathlon; freshman Sarah Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.) was sixth in the hammer (150-3); senior Alexis Gligor (Woodbury/Woodbury, N.J.) was eighth in the pole vault (10-11.75); senior Katrina Steenkamer (St. Mark's/Rising Sun, Md.) was ninth in the 5,000 meters (17:00.64); freshman Kristina Valko (Central Bucks East/Pipersville, Pa.) was ninth in the javelin (105-10); and senior Megan Flynn (Robbinsville/Robbinsville, N.J.) was 10th in the 10,000 meters (37:20.14).
