WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Junior Latazah Coleman and senior Amira Idris each captured individual titles to lead the University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field team to a fourth place team finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon at the College of William & Mary.
Coleman (Appoquinimink/Middletown, Del.) won the 200 meters with a time of 24.03 while Idris
(Hylton/Woodbridge, Va./at left in photo) won her third career CAA title as she recorded a leap of 40-6 to win the triple jump competition.
Idris, who finished second in the long jump on Friday, collected her third career CAA title by winning the triple jump Saturday.
For her efforts, Idris was named the CAA Female Outstanding Field Performer, winning the award for the second time in her career. She also was honored at the 2013 meet after winning the long jump and placing second in the triple jump at the CAA championships.
League newcomer Elon captured the team title with 150 points followed by host William & Mary (134.5), James Madison (122), Delaware (104.5), Northeastern and UNCW (98), College of Charleston (58), and Towson (52). Delaware was the defending team champion.
During the two-day meet, Delaware student-athletes recorded two first place finishes, three seconds, two thirds, three fourths, and three fifths in a solid effort for head coach Wendy McFarlane's squad.
"It was a really good weekend for the team," said McFarlane. "We competed with heartfelt performances. We knew going into the championship that it would be a tough repeat and that we would have to have season personal-best performances to stay in the battle. We had season-bests
from almost everyone this weekend, school records, and ECAC qualifiers, but we were outclassed by teams that had more depth on the field. Amira did an outstanding job. I really could not ask for more from the girls. They all represented well. Kudos to our new rival Elon for their first CAA title."
Coleman enjoyed a solid weekend as she won the 200 meters with the No. 2 time in school history, teamed with sophomore Tyler Jackson (School Without Walls/Washington, D.C.), sophomore Paige Thompson-Charles (Medgar Evers Prep/Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Idris to finish second in the 4 x 100 meter relay (at left) with the second fastest time in school history (46.47), and also finish fifth in the 100 meters (12.08).
Idris, who finishes second in the long jump on Friday, collected her third career CAA title by winning the triple jump Saturday. The 2013 CAA Female Field Outstanding Athlete, Idris won the triple jump title in 2013 and captured the long jump competition in 2014.
Delaware athletes also posted several other top five finishes Saturday led by freshman Sarah Hillman (Polytech/Dover, Del.) who was third in the discus (148-9) and fourth in the shot put (45-8). Her shot put throw broke the school record of 44-11.5 by Alana Pantale in 2012.
Junior Chelsi Campbell (St. Joseph's Convent/Diego Martin, Trinidad posted a fourth place finish in the 400 meters (57.47) and also ran the third leg of the 4 x 400 meter relay team that was fourth in a time of 3:50.46. She teamed with senior Breanna Nicholson (North Brunswick/North Brunswick,N.J.), sophomore Carolyn Darr (Penns Valley/Centre Hall, Pa.), and junior Michele Simmons (Southern Regional/Manahawkin, N.J.)
