INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A total of 11 University of Delaware Athletics teams have been honored by the NCAA for the academic success of their student-athletes, including the women's golf and women's tennis teams that were recognized as recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate.
The recognition awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent of each sport. This year's awards are compiled using the academic and retention rates for the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2013-14 academic years.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
In addition to the UD women's tennis and women's golf programs, the Blue Hen men's golf, men's soccer, women's cross country, women's rowing, field hockey, softball, women's swimming, women's indoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field teams all received a perfect single-year score of 1,000 for the 2013-14 year only.
“Congratulations to our hard-working student-athletes and the coaches and academic staffs that support them in this great achievement,” said University of Delaware Director of Athletics and Recreation Services Eric Ziady. “To have 11 of our programs with perfect single-year APR scores and 20 of our programs with multi-year rates over 950 is quite an accomplishment. Even more impressive is the fact that three of our teams with perfect scores (field hockey, men's soccer and women's track & field) either won Colonial Athletic Association championships or were selected for post-season NCAA Tournaments during the 2013-14 season.”
The Delaware women's tennis and women's golf programs were among 37 Colonial Athletic Association teams in 17 different sports who were recently recognized as recipients of the NCAA Public Recognition Award, which is based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. Delaware was one of eight current CAA schools that had multiple teams honored with the Public Recognition Awards with Elon leading the way with eight teams followed by William & Mary with six.
“I continue to be proud of the academic success of our student-athletes,” said UD Director of Student-Services Tim Morrissey. “It's great that we have so many who want to be successful both on the field and in the classroom. It gives our department enormous pride to know that we are helping to develop future leaders beyond their time spent at UD.”
Delaware is one of just four CAA schools to receive a Public Recognition Award in each of the program's 10 years, joining William & Mary, Elon, and UNCW. The UD women's tennis team has been honored each of the last 10 years, joining the Elon women's golf and women's cross country programs as the only CAA programs that have been honored every year.
In addition to men's and women's tennis and women's golf, the Delaware softball, men's golf, women's soccer, women's cross country, women's swimming & diving, men's cross country, and men's track & field programs have all been recognized in past years with NCAA Recognition Awards.
