NEWARK, Del. -- A total of 144 student-athletes were among the 5,842 undergraduate and graduate students who were honored Saturday morning as part of the University of Delaware's 166th annual Commencement ceremony at Delaware Stadium.
A capacity crowd of family and friends was on hand to witness the conferring of degrees under beautiful sunny skies at the 22,000-seat stadium.
Former University of Delaware All-American wrestler Dave DeWalt (at right) who earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from UD in 1986, was the keynote speaker. Named one of the
25 most influential executives in high technology, DeWalt is chief executive officer and chairman of the board of FireEye Inc.
He joined FireEye, a leading cybersecurity company, as board chairman in June 2012 and was appointed chief executive officer in November 2012.
FireEye today has more than 2,500 employees worldwide and over 3,100 customers across more than 67 countries, including over 200 of the Fortune 500.
As a result of this unprecedented success, FireEye has become a focal point for the media, industry analyst and investor communities that follow the world of cyber security. Before FireEye, he served as president and chief executive officer of McAfee Inc. and led the acquisition of McAfee by Intel for $7.7 billion in 2010.
DeWalt, who was also presented an honorary degree during the 90-minute ceremony, was a three-time East Coast Conference wrestling champion as a 177-pounder, advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times, and became the first UD wrestler to earn All-American honors in 1986. His 101-9 career record was the best-ever for a UD wrestler.
“I am proud to be a part of Blue Hen Nation,” said an enthusiastic DeWalt in addressing the graduates. “UD changed my life forever and had so much to do with everything that has happened in my life. I've learned some valuable lessons during my life and the importance of hard work, honesty, and humility.”
DeWalt urged the graduates to “always push yourself to be better, remember that adversity is a test of leadership, and always follow your dreams.”
