ELON, N.C. – Behind four home runs and eight extra-base hits, the University of Delaware baseball team was able to pull away from Elon Saturday and earn a 10-4 victory in a Colonial Athletic Association tilt at Latham Field.
The win marked UD's second CAA road victory of the season and gives the Hens the opportunity to earn their first road series victory of the season Sunday.
Jim Sherman. “Tyler Powell had a real solid game for us and I like the way he is swinging the bat. I was really happy with the way Ron Marinaccio started the game and how Taylor Mahoney closed out the game. To beat a quality team like Elon you need a complete team effort, and that is what we got.”Both team went scoreless for the first two innings, but Joe Giacchino drew first blood for the Blue Hens in the third when the senior knocked in Diaz Nardo on an RBI single.
The Hens (20-21, 8-12 CAA) then added to their lead in the fourth when Greg Olenski slammed his fourth home run of the season and his second in the last three games. The blast gave the Hens a 2-0 advantage.
The Phoenix (24-25, 13-10 CAA) answered UD in the bottom half of the third when Elon posted three runs and took a 3-2 lead.
Neither team scored until the sixth when Delaware took the lead for good with a four-run frame. Nardo helped UD retake the lead with a two-run double before Ty Warrington added to the UD lead with a RBI double of his own. Giacchino concluded the Blue Hen scoring with an RBI on an fielder's choice.
Elon scored one run in the seventh, but Delaware eliminated any doubt of the outcome when Diaz Nardo clubbed his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the eighth, and Powell and Nick Liggett each launched a home run in the ninth. Liggett's shot came as a pinch-hitter.
Marinaccio surrendered four earned runs on eight hits in six innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Mahoney pitched the final three innings of the contest and did not allow a run while securing his second save of the season.
Powell led Delaware with three hits, while Nardo notched a game-high three RBI. UD clubbed eight extra-base hits and four Delaware batters recorded a multi-hit game.
The Hens and Phoenix will square off in the rubber match of the series Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
