TUCSON, Ariz. -- University of Delaware third baseman Diaz Nardo, who played a big role during the Blue Hens' run to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament last month, has been honored on the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American Team.
Jim Sherman, who led his team to a record of 26-24 and a third place finish at the CAA Tournament behind NCAA Tournament participants College of Charleston and UNCW in May. “He has put a lot of hard work into his first year and we are looking for even greater things from him in the future.”Nardo, who sat out as a redshirt during the 2014 campaign, ranked among the Blue Hens' top offensive threats in 2015 as he started each of the 49 games he played in and batted .281 with 52 hits, 33 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, and team-highs of 35 runs batted in and five home runs.
A member of the CAA All-Rookie Team, Nardo had 14 multi-hit games and a team-best nine multi-RBI games, including a season-high four RBI in a 17-14 win over William & Mary on Apr. 25. He also had an 11-game hitting streak during the season that was the team's third longest of the season. He hit safely in three of the Blue Hens' five CAA Tournament games and scored a run in all but one of the contests.
Nardo becomes the first UD player to earn Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American honors since second baseman D.J. Long was honored following the 2010 season.
The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball's Freshman Pitcher of the Year in Alex Lange of LSU and Freshmen Players of the Year in Brendan McKay of Louisville and JJ Schwarz of Florida.
