NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware football program and the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington have forged a strong bond over the last few years as numerous Blue Hen student-athletes have volunteered their time to serve meals to the homeless and perform much-needed work around the facility.
The two are teaming up again on Friday, Sept. 4, when the Blue Hens will open the season by hosting Jacksonville (Fla.) University at Delaware Stadium.
Blue Hens fans once again have the opportunity to get involved and make a difference as well.
The University of Delaware and the Sunday Breakfast Mission are encouraging fans attending the game to bring along any kind of canned foods (fruits, vegetables, meats, soups, stews, etc.) to donate to this great cause.
When the parking lots open at 3 p.m. Friday, fans will have the chance to visit any of the eight locations directly outside of the gates of Delaware Stadium and donate items into waiting containers until the start of the game. Staff members and volunteers of the Sunday Breakfast Mission will be on-site to offer assistance and provide information about the organization.
“We are tremendously excited to have the Blue Hens and their fans once again show they are a team both on and off the field,” said Tom Laymon, President and CEO and Senior Pastor of the Sunday Breakfast Mission. “This couldn't have come at a more critical time. Every day at the Sunday Breakfast Mission nearly 1,000 meals are provided. Men, women, boys and girls are depending on Blue Hens fans to bring thousands of cans of food on Sept. 4.
Delaware football and the Sunday Breakfast Mission also teamed up for a successful food drive in 2013 when the Hens hosted Delaware State at Delaware Stadium.
Jerry OravitzMany of the current residents of the Sunday Breakfast Mission will also be the guests of the University at the game and will have the chance to see first-hand the support of the community and the generosity of Blue Hen football fans.
“The Sunday Breakfast Mission is thrilled to partner with the University of Delaware football program to help defeat hunger and homelessness,” said Hall, a 1978 Delaware graduate and a former member of the Blue Hen football team who serves as Chairman of the Board for the Sunday Breakfast Mission. “We are eternally grateful to Coach Brock, his coaching staff, and the many student-athletes who serve meals at the mission on a regular basis.”
