Duke (6-3) took a 2-1 lead into halftime and then tallied three more goals in the second half to win going away. The Blue Devils outshot the Hens 20-12 and held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. The five goals, 20 shots, and eight corners were the most allowed by the Blue Hens this season.
Delaware, off to its best start in school history, fell to 8-1 as the Blue Hens suffered their first loss since an NCAA Tournament setback last Nov. 12.
Rolf van de Kerkhof"Our game experience today – regardless of the final score – was needed in our overall building process as a program," said van de Kerkhof. "I am positive that our group will take advantage of their game performance and evaluation, and be better prepared for our Richmond game on Sunday and our CAA season opener next weekend.”
Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Heather Morris 13:20 into the game, but Coveleski came right back to tie things at 1-1 as she scored off a rebound just 67 seconds later. Coveleski, who now has four goals this season, had missed the last four games with a leg injury.
The Blue Devils then took a 2-1 lead into halftime on a goal by Hannah Barreca with 5:44 left in the first half and turned it on in the second half thanks to goals from Hunter Bracale, Robin Blazing, and Ainsley Gill.
Delaware will return to action Sunday when the Hens travel to Richmond for a 1 p.m. game.
