NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens saw another career day from sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) while senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) continued to move up in the career record books Sunday afternoon as Delaware outlasted Towson, 69-64, in overtime at the Bob Carpenter Center.
A week after pulling down 15 boards against Northeastern, Nicholas (at left) logged a career-best 17 rebounds versus the Tigers in addition to tying a career-high with 17 points. The forward added three blocked shots and two assists in 38 minutes.
Green (below right) led the Hens (9-7, 4-1 CAA) with her third-career 20-point game with four 3-pointers and a season-best six rebounds. The guard is now third in program history with 158 treys and nearing the 1,000-point plateau with 991 career tallies.
Freshman Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) registered 13 points and eight rebounds while junior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) came off the bench due to an ankle injury and recorded 10 points and two assists.
The Blue Hens held a 28-23 halftime advantage before Towson (5-11, 2-3 CAA) outscored Delaware, 20-15, in the third quarter. The Tigers were ahead, 56-54, with just under 20 seconds remaining in regulation before Enabosi (below left) was able to lay-in the ball from the right side to tie things at 56-56. Enabosi was then able to force a Raven Bankston
turnover to send the game into overtime.
Nicholas drained her second career 3-pointer before knocking down four free throws to give UD the overtime victory.
The win was the fourth straight for Delaware, who had previously lost five of six.
Raven Bankston led all scorers with 21 points and five rebounds while Raine Bankston notched 15 points and seven rebounds.
“We knew this was going to be a battle and I'm thankful we survived it. Today we were able to hang tough and executed when we needed to and we grinded out that win. It was a back and forth game. We played solid defense, but I give Towson credit, they were hitting jump shot after jump shot. There are some things we need to work on before next weekend. The teams in this league are very even, there are no easy games.”
Senior Courtni Green
“This was a good win. We had to fight and this showed everybody that we're really a good team and we're not going to give up. We kept our composure and while it was overtime, we played it like another five-minute segment. I think that shows that we're maturing.”
Senior Makeda Nicholas
“This was a tough one. The key was to keep fighting and play fundamental defense and in the end that's what we did. They have a lot of small, quick guards that can get to the basket and we had to lock in on our defense. This game definitely boosts our confidence, but we need to be ready for upcoming tough matchups.”
