NFHCA Poll
CHANDLER, Ariz. – Following the best start in program history since 1988, the University of Delaware field hockey team continues move ahead in the national polls as the Blue Hens ranked No. 8 in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
Delaware received 500 total points to advance from last week's No. 9 spot. Previously, the Hens had not been ranked within the Top 10 since 1998 when the Hens reached as high as a No. 6 ranking.
The Blue Hens are currently 12-2 on the year and 3-0 in CAA action. UD has won a season-high eight straight contests including a 3-1 win over then-No. 10 Michigan and 7-2 rout of Hofstra this past weekend.
Delaware is just one of six Division I squads nationally to possess just two or fewer losses this season. The Hens rank fourth nationally with 4.07 goals per game, 11.14 points per game and with an 85.7 winning percentage.
Connecticut captured the No. 1 spot for the third week in a row with 759 total points and 18 first place votes as the last undefeated team in the nation at 13-0.
Syracuse moved up two places to No. 2 with 752 points and 11 first place votes while North Carolina held its slot at No. 3 with 705 points and six first place votes. Duke dropped to No. 4 (702 points; five first place votes) while Penn State remained at No. 5 (609 points).
The next three teams all moved up one spot with Maryland at No. 6, Louisville at No. 7 and Delaware at No. 8. Northwestern fell three places to No. 9 while Virginia held steady at No. 10.
The next Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll will be announced on Tuesday, October 18. The poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection into the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens play just one contest this weekend as Delaware hosts Penn at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Fred P. Rullo Stadium. Admission to all UD home field hockey games are free and open to the public.
