OXFORD, Ohio -- Austin Peay's Josh Robinson drove the length of the court for a layup with :01.9 seconds left as the Governors edged the University of Delaware men's basketball team, 76-75, Sunday at Millett Hall on the final day of the Tarkett Sports Classic.
Delaware (3-3) trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half and was still down nine with four and a half minutes to play, but Blue Hen senior Devonne Pinkard buried three consecutive three-pointers to pull UD even at 69-69 with 2:24 to play.
John Murry answered with two free throws to put Austin Peay (3-2) back in front, but Ryan Daly countered with a layup and Pinkard knocked down another triple to give Delaware a 74-71 advantage with 50 seconds to play.
Robinson then hit a three-pointer to tie the game again, before Eric Carter was fouled on a layup attempt and hit one of two from the foul line with :09.7 on the clock. Delaware then called timeout, but Robinson raced down the court and scored the game-winning bucket.
Delaware then threw the inbounds pass out of bounds, and after Darian Bryant tipped Austin Peay's inbounds pass, the clock ran out.
“I'm disappointed we didn't get this one but I'm very proud of our group for battling back and giving ourselves a chance at the end,” UD head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “We need to use this as a reference point to help us be better in this situation next time.”
Pinkard finished with a career-high 22 points, including 16 in the second half to fuel the comeback, and knocked down seven three-pointers. Chivarsky Corbett recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Daly added 11 points and six boards.
Kenny Jones paced Austin Peay with career-highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Robinson finished with 23 points and five assists.
Neither team led by more than four points in a competitive first half that featured 10 lead changes. Austin Peay took a 38-34 lead late in the period, before a short jumper by Daly cut the Blue Hens' deficit to two at the break.
The Governors then opened the second half with a 17-5 run, going up double digits at 55-41 on a three-point play by Jones with 14:58 remaining. Austin Peay went up as much as 15 points at 65-50, before Delaware responded with a 19-4 run to get back in the game.
Delaware, which played its sixth game in 10 days to open the season, will take a week off before hosting Bryn Athyn next Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
