NEWARK, Del. - Playing at home for the first time in over two weeks, the University of Delaware men's basketball team treated the Bob Carpenter Center crowd to a quality effort Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens reached season-highs in points, assists, and field goal percentage as part of an 84-51 victory over Bryn Athyn.
The Blue Hens (4-3) snapped a two-game losing streak as four Delaware players scored in double figures, seven had four or more rebounds, and six had two or more assists.
Delaware shot a season-best 58.6 percent from the field (34 of 58), knocked down 9 of 22 three-pointers, dished out 21 assists, and committed just nine turnovers for the game.
Nine different players scored and no one saw more than 27 minutes of action in the balanced effort.
The Blue Hens recorded several historical superlatives, including posting their highest winning margin since a 75-40 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison on Jan. 15, 2005. Delaware also posted its highest assist total since also dishing out 21 vs. James Madison in a 95-68 win on Jan. 19, 2006 and had its highest team field goal percentage since shooting .593 in a CAA Tournament semifinal win over Northeastern on Mar. 9, 2014.
Delaware shot over 58 percent from the field and had single digits in turnovers for the first time since a 92-73 win over Drexel nearly 25 years ago (Mar. 3, 1993).
Sophomore guard Chivarsky Corbett (above right/Photo by Jeff Fannon) led the way for the Hens with a season-high 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field while Skye Johnson (at left/Photo by Jeff Fannon) converted all seven of his shots from the field and finished with 14 points, Darian Bryant added 13 points, and Cazmon Hayes chipped in with 11 points and four assists.
"It was nice for some of our guys to gain confidence today,” said Delaware rookie head coach Martin Ingelsby. “It was a great day for Skye Johnson. He is going to be an important piece for us moving forward. I think the days off this week really helped Chivarsky. He was able to get into a rhythm today and is moving better on the offensive end. When he and Devonne (Pinkard) are going well, that makes us much harder to guard."
Bryn Athyn (1-2), an NCAA III program from the suburbs of Philadelphia playing for the second straight day, got 11 points from Troy Steed while Devante Laws came off the bench to add 10 points.
The Lions hit seven three-pointers but shot just 31.6 percent from the field (18 of 57) for the game and were outrebounded by a 40-27 margin.
Delaware hit on 17 of 29 first half shots (.586) en route to a 43-21 halftime lead and built the margin to as high as 34 points three times over the final six minutes of action. The Lions never got closer than 21 points over the final 20 minutes of action.
"Coach always wants us to share the ball,” noted Corbett. “And you saw that tonight with our 21 assists on 34 baskets."
