NEWARK, Del. -- Thanks to a huge rebounding advantage and the outside shooting of Chivarsky Corbett, the University of Delaware men's basketball squad retained state bragging rights Friday night as the Blue Hens pulled away in the second half for a 64-49 victory over Delaware State at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens (5-3), who won their second straight game and improved to 3-0 at home for the second straight season, outrebounded the Hornets by a 46-26 margin, including a 15-4 edge on the offensive end. Corbett, a sophomore guard, led the Hens for the second straight game as he knocked down a career-high five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 16 points to lead the way.
The Hornets (2-6), coming off a big 79-72 road win at St. John's Tuesday night for the program's first-ever win over a Big East foe, managed just 21 second half points as they squandered an early second half lead. DeAndre Haywood led Delaware State with 15 points while DeVaughn Mallory added 10 points.
“I'm really proud of our guys,” said Delaware first-year head coach Martin Ingelsby. “We talked the last couple days that our defensive presence is something we have to hang our hat on - I always put on the board defend and rebound - and we outrebounded them by 20 rebounds and did a terrific job guarding the three-point line.”
Corbett also added eight rebounds while junior guard Anthony Mosley (top left) contributed 13 points and four assists, Eric Carter scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, and Cazmon Hayes (below right) and Ryan Daly each chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds apiece. Delaware entered the game ranked 17th in NCAA Division I with a +9.9 rebounding average and that held true.
Delaware State shot just 38.2 percent from the field for the game and was just 1 for 15 from three-point range, including 0 for 10 in the first half as the Hornets trailed just 31-28 at the break.
“They had some guys who were up there in the country in three-point percentage, so we wanted to limit shots from the perimeter and make them make enough two-point shots to beat us,” said Ingelsby. “And I love what our group has done on the defensive backboards. When this group can lock in and defend, we've got a chance to win every night. Chivarsky was excited to play against zone, he's a guy who is finding his rhythm on the offensive end in this system. I've been really impressed with his ability to make shots. When he's making shots from the outside, it opens up some driving areas for other guys.”
Delaware jumped out to the 31-28 halftime lead and remained in front for the first four minutes of the second half. But Delaware State went on a 7-1 run and regained the lead at 39-36 with 14:40 left to play. Daly and Corbett each answered with a three-pointer to start a 10-0 run for the Hens and Delaware never trailed again. Another 9-2 run in the final six minutes helped the Blue Hens stay in front.
