NEWARK, Del. – A third quarter comeback by Hofstra didn't crack the Blue Hens Sunday afternoon as Delaware held on for the 54-47 win at the Bob Carpenter Center.
UD led by 20 at halftime before the Pride outscored the Hens, 20-7, in the third quarter to cut the lead to 43-36 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Hofstra continued to cut at the lead in the fourth as Ashunae Durant knocked down a jumper to bring the score to 43-43 with 6:17 left on the clock.
Up by one at the one-minute mark, junior Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) found senior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook), who nailed a huge 3-pointer to force a Pride timeout before the Hens (14-12, 9-6 CAA) sealed the victory with three free throws.
Green led all scorers with 19 points while Brown added eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) collected a game-high 11 rebounds in addition to six points and two steals.
Krystal Luciano guided Hofstra (19-7, 10-5 CAA) with 10 points while Durant and Sandra Dongmo grabbed 10 rebounds apiece.
“This was a great win for us today. We did exactly what we needed to do at the end. The kids made good decisions at the end of the game. We had to get to the line and close it out, which we did. Hofstra is a good team. We've been so close to getting big wins, so it feels really good for our team to get this victory.”
Senior Courtni Green
“It's always a good feeling to beat one of the top teams in the league. We posted a huge run in the first quarter and they had their own in the third. We knew we had to get back to playing Delaware basketball.”
Sophomore Makeda Nicholas
“This was a big win against one of the top teams in the conference. Hofstra has always been a tough team and they've always played us tough. We expected them to keep fighting and keep coming back at us. Rebounding was crucial and we were able to get on the boards and outrebound them.”
