STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Sophomore Sarah Hillman captured the shot put with a school record toss and freshman Ashley Bailey posted two top five finishes to lead the University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team to a seventh place team finish at the Villanova Invitational Saturday evening at the Ocean Breeze Park Athletic Complex.
Delaware posted eight top 10 finishes and collected 38 total points to finish seventh out of 12 teams. Penn won the team title with 121.5 points followed by Albany, Temple, South Florida, host Villanova, Georgetown, and Delaware.
“It was a great weekend for the team,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “They competed well at both meets (Friday and Saturday at Armory Collegiate Invitational at New York City). I am very proud of the performances so far this season. The ladies are seeing good results from their hard work.”
Hillman was the Hens' lone champion at Villanova as she won her second shot put title of the season and her fifth career indoor title. She tossed the shot put 47-feet, 2.25-inches to capture the title and break the UD record of 46-5 by Rachel Young back in 2007. It also qualified her for the ECAC Championships in March. Hillman also placed seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 50-7.25.
Bailey continued her outstanding freshman campaign as she was second in the pole vault (12-5.5) and third in the long jump (18-2) to pace the UD jumpers at Villanova. Her leap in the pole vault broke her own UD freshman record she set two weeks ago.
Also for the Hens, freshman Nadia Khoury was sixth in the high jump (5-5), freshman Olivia Goncerz was sixth in the triple jump (34-8.5), freshman Carlyn McGrath was eighth in the triple jump (34-3), and sophomore Ciera Ismail was 10th in the 200 meter dash (26.10).
Delaware will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Princeton Invitational.
