NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware bats were electric during the Blue Hens' 13-2 victory over Binghamton University in non-league baseball action Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware (8-4), winners of three straight and five of its last six, downed the Bearcats (2-9) in the opener of a four-game weekend set with a season-high 13 runs, including nine runs in the sixth inning. The two teams will battle again Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
Blue Hen sophomore ace Ron Marinaccio pitched seven solid innings, giving up only one run on
three hits, while striking out four and walking one. He improved to 4-0 on the young season, becoming the first UD starting pitcher to start the season out 4-0 since Matt Heppner opened the 2006 season with a 5-0 mark.
Shortstop Nick Tierno had the biggest hit of the day as he cleared the based with a grand slam as part of the nine-run sixth. It was the first home run of his brief UD career.
Delaware would strike first in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out RBI single by Baker bringing in Trimble. Binghamton would answer in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to bring in one. In the bottom of the fourth, Trimble led things off again with a single up the middle.
After Nick Patten was hit by a pitch, James Meeker broke the tie game with a single through the left side to bring in Trimble once again. Later in the inning Baker earned his second RBI of the game with a single through the left side.
The Delaware bats roared in the bottom of the sixth as the Hens scored nine runs on seven hits. The nine runs were the most by a Blue Hen team since the 2012 squad scored 10 runs in the seventh inning of a 12-9 Colonial Athletic Association Tournament win over Hofstra.
The big blow of that inning came off the bat of Tierno following an intentional walk to Kevin Mohollen. The Blue Hens were not done there as Nick Liggett recorded an RBI single, Meeker added a two-run double, and Brian Mayer took the first pitch of his at-bat deep over the left field wall for his second home run in two games.
“It felt really good to hit that grand slam, especially at that point in the game with only a three-run lead and after the intentional walk,” said Tierno, a first-year transfer from LaSalle.
Nick Spadafino relieved Marinaccio in the eighth with a scoreless inning and Zach Flowers closed the game in the ninth.
The Bearcats' Rob Hardy received the loss, giving up four runs in 4.1 innings to fall to 0-2 on the season.
