Rally in Nightcap Sends Delaware to Doubleheader Sweep Over Binghamton

Jim Sherman. “We thought we were dead in the water in Game 2, but we caught a couple breaks and then finally we got that big six-run inning in the fifth. To finish we got some good pitching on the back-end from (Matt) Hornich and (Colman) Vila. In the first game was some good old fashioned pitching. We got a good start out of Brandon Walter and then Hinton coming in to close it. It was a good day, good sweep.”

In the seven-inning first game, the Hens got solid pitching from freshmen Brandon Walter and Kyle Hinton and used an RBI single by Jordan Glover in the fifth and a solo home run from Doug Trimble in the sixth.

The Hens used a six-run fifth inning in the night cap to rally back from a 7-2 deficit and move on to the 9-7 victory with Hornich getting the win and Vila picking up his third save of the campaign.

Walter started on the mound for the Blue Hens in Game 1 and threw 4.2 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. Hinton came in for relief in the fifth as the Bearcats were threatening with two runs in. But Hinton struck out the only batter he saw in the inning to retire the side and then went two more perfect innings to pick up his first win.

The Blue Hens struck first in the second inning with a one-out, bases loaded single through the right side by designated hitter Nick Liggett. Binghamton tied up the game in the top of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch and an error. However, the Blue Hens would come right back with Glover's go-ahead single in the fifth an Trimble's solo shot over the leftfield Blue Monster.

Kevin Milley took the mound for Delaware in Game 2 and started strong but the Bearcats scored five runs in the third on six hits to chase him. Hornich entered and allowed just one run over 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Despite a 7-2 deficit and a game already in hand on the day, the Blue Hens failed to give in and came roaring back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring six runs on three hits, one error, and three walks.

The big hit in the inning came off of the bat of freshman catcher Adam Rapp (at left) with the bases loaded. Rapp sent a 0-2 pitch to the right center field gap to unload the bases for the Blue Hens, giving UD an 8-7 lead.

Trimble would strike again, giving the Blue Hens another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh with a solo blast to right field. Vila then pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.
