Jim Sherman. “Northeastern just did a little better on the mound, situational hitting, and on the defensive end. We did not play bad at all. We played decent, but they just played better. Hopefully tomorrow we can put together a complete game and stay in the race for a (CAA) playoff spot.”Delaware fell behind by three runs early as Northeastern (18-14, 6-4 CAA) scored a run in the second inning after back-to-back doubles by Jake Ferrell and Josh Treff. The Huskies would then tack on two more runs in the third off an RBI single by the designated hitter Zach Perry and an error by UD first baseman Nick Patten to go up 3-0.
The Blue Hens were able to get a run back thanks to a two-out single by Kevin Mohollen, who later scored on an error by centerfielder Charlie McConnell. Delaware then threatened once again in the sixth inning when Jordan Glover led off with a double down the left field line.
With some situational hitting, Diaz Nardo brought in Glover after grounding out to first. Delaware second baseman Jeremy Ake then lined a triple in the left-center field gap and scored off a two-out RBI single by Doug Trimble to tie the game at 3-3.
Northeastern went ahead for good with two runs in the eighth, scoring its first run on an error by UD rightfielder Kyle Baker and its second on an RBI double by Treff. The Huskies tacked on an insurance run in the ninth inning thanks to a home run off the left field foul pole by Max Burt.
The Blue Hen bats, which did produce eight hits on the day, were then shut down by Huskie right-hander Mike Fitzgerald, who earned his sixth save of the season.
Freshman lefthander Brandon Walter started on the mound for the Blue Hens and pitched seven solid innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits, and striking out five NU batters. Colman Vila (1-1) entered the game in the eighth inning and suffered the loss.
“Overall I was happy with the performance from Walter,” said Sherman. “He settled down after the first three innings and pitched very well.”
