NEWARK, Del. -- It was a tough day all around for the University of Delaware baseball team Sunday afternoon as the Hens were limited to just three hits and Northeastern scored in five separate innings on the way to a 14-0 victory and a Colonial Athletic Association series sweep at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens (21-14, 4-8 CAA), who fell to the Huskies by scores of 6-1 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday, were swept by Northeastern (19-14, 7-4 CAA) for the second straight year.
Northeastern banged out 18 hits, including two home runs, three doubles, and three triples and was in
control the entire afternoon.
Delaware, which got singles from Nick Tierno, Kyle Baker, and Calvin Scott (above), were shutout for the first time this season and for the first time in 92 games since a 7-0 loss at Towson on May 10, 2014.
The Hens were shutout at home for the first time since Hannah Stadium was rededicated in 2014 and for the first time at home overall in 55 games since a 9-0 blanking at the hands of William & Mary on March 16, 2013.
Northeastern used four pitchers to convert the shutout as Dustin Hunt (4-2) allowed just two hits and struck out five in six innings to earn the win. Tyler Robinson, Tyler Brown, and Mike Driscoll combined to allow just one hit and two base runners over the final three frames.
The Huskies scored all the runs they would need on a RBI triple by freshman Josh Treff in the second and also later got home runs from Pat Madigan and Jake Farrell. Northeastern broke the game open with four runs in the fifth, two in the seventh, and five more in the eighth.
Madigan, who fell a double short of the cycle, went 3 for 6 with two runs scored and five RBI for Northeastern while Mason Koppens was 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
Delaware freshman Kyle Hinton (2-1) got his second start but suffered the loss as he lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed three runs.
