NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware controlled the final seven innings of the ball game but that wasn't enough to overcame a rocky start as the Blue Hens lost their fourth straight game Tuesday afternoon with a 9-4 baseball setback to Saint Joseph's at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Saint Joseph's (18-14), which won its fifth straight game - all on the road - scored three runs in the first inning and five more in the second off Delaware starter Zach Flowers and stayed in front the
entire day in posting the victory. The Hawks banged out 10 hits, turned four double plays, and had eight different pitchers combine for the win.
Delaware (21-15), which saw its losing streak expand to four games, battled back and outscored the Hawks 4-1 over the final seven innings but it wasn't enough.
The Blue Hens recorded 10 hits and got an outstanding effort from freshman pitcher Cole Benjamin (at left) who relieved Flowers in the second and scattered eight hits over six scoreless innings.
The Hawks defeated the Hens for the fourth straight time and for the eight time in the last 10 meetings.
Flowers (1-2) was hit hard in the opening innings as Saint Joseph's used an RBI double by Lau and a two-run single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead after one frame. The Hawks then scored five times in the second with Brue's eighth home run of the season the big blow.
Delaware freshman centerfielder Kevin Mohollen had two hits, stole a base, and knocked in two runs while designated hitter Doug Trimble also had two hits, including an RBI single in the third to put the Hens on the board. Mohollen added an RBI single in the fourth and the Hens got two more runs in the ninth on a Mohollen double and a groundout by Kyle Baker.
Sherman rested many of his regulars as leftfielder Jordan Glover, rightfielder Baker, first baseman Nick Patten, second baseman Jeremy Ake, and catcher Nick Tierno were all out of the starting lineup. All but Glover entered the game later in the contest.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware had a four-game home winning streak vs. non-league opponents snapped and lost for just the third time in 15 tries against non-league foes at Hannah Stadium in 2016
• Tierno entered the game in the fifth inning and walked, extending his on-base streak to 19 games. He popped out in the seventh inning and had his 9-game hitting streak snapped
• Delaware will continue action Wednesday with a home game vs. in-state foe Wilmington University at 3 p.m. Dover, Del. native Nick Spadafino will get the start for Delaware.
