RICHMOND, Va. -- Top weekly Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse honors went to University of Delaware junior attackman Paul Major and freshman faceoff specialist Jake Hervada this week as each played a big part in the Blue Hens' huge 10-7 men's lacrosse upset win over Towson Saturday afternoon.
Major, who scored four goals, was named the CAA Player of the Week while Hervada, who scored his first career goal and won 9 of 20 faceoff attempts, was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Week. The league announced the selections Monday afternoon.
The two lifted Delaware (5-8, 2-1 CAA) over the No. 7 ranked Tigers (10-2, 2-1 CAA) in one of the biggest men's lacrosse upsets of the season. The victory also vaulted the Hens back into the thick of the CAA standings with two games left to play.
Delaware will host Drexel this Saturday, Apr. 23, at 1 p.m. for Senior Day and will then close out the regular season on Friday, Apr. 29 against current CAA leader Fairfield at 7 p.m. Both games will be played at Delaware Stadium. The Hens are looking to advance to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2014 and capture their first league title since 2011.
An economics major from Royersford, Pa. (Spring-Ford High School), Major scored two goals in the first quarter and one in the second as Delaware took a 6-4 lead at halftime and never trailed. His fourth goal of the day came with eight seconds left in the third quarter pushed lead to 8-4. He also had a ground ball. It was the fifth career hat trick for Major and his fourth of the season.
Hervada, a communications major from Philadelphia, Pa. (Haverford School), set the tone for Delaware's big win. He won nine faceoffs on the day, but it was hit first that made a big difference. Hervada won the opening faceoff, scooped up the ground ball, and scored just six seconds into the game to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
The Hens held that lead the entire game. The shot and goal were his firsts of the season. The six-second goal was the second fastest in UD history. He also had six ground balls and a caused turnover during the game.
