ELON, N.C. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team looks for its first Colonial Athletic Association title this weekend as the Blue Hens travel to Elon University for tournament action at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
UD, the No. 9 seed, will open play Thursday at 9 a.m. with first round action against eight-seeded Hofstra for the second straight season. Last year, Delaware defeated the Pride, 4-0, in the first round. Earlier this season, HU (13-6, 1-3 CAA) collected the 5-2 victory over the Hens (8-9, 9-6 CAA) in Oceanside, N.Y. Delaware is 3-0 all-time over Hofstra in the CAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens feature a young squad, with just two upperclassmen in senior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 98 School No. 1953) and junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton).
LaMachia guides Delaware with 15 singles wins, nine of which came in dual play, while Naumova did not compete this season due to a back injury.
The underclassmen have come up strong for the Blue Hens however as six have registered at least 11 victories on the year.
Sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) has been the team's top-flight singles competitor for the entire season and has collected 12 wins for the Hens.
Freshmen Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Friends) and Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) each have logged 13 victories for Delaware while classmate Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic's) has 14 wins. Fellow freshman Draga Sabotic (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) has also notched 11 singles successes.
In doubles action, LaMachia and Studnicki lead the way with 10 triumphs in top-flight play. Individually, LaMachia has accumulated 16 wins while Komer and Studnicki follow with 14 and 13, respectively.
Should UD advance, the Hens will face top-seeded William & Mary at 9 a.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. The winner moves on to Saturday's 2 p.m. semifinal contest and the CAA women's championship match is set for 2 p.m. Sunday.
