NEWARK, Del. -- When it comes to first career starts, it doesn't get much better than this.
Jim Sherman. "That was a great effort by Spadafino. I was hoping to get four or five innings out of him but as he kept dialing up each inning and throwing well we just kept him going."While Spadafino was mowing down the Wildcats, Delaware's bats were also getting the job done. The Hens banged out 10 hits on the day as Tierno matched a career-high by knocking in four runs, shortstop James Meeker went 3 for 3 and scored twice from the nine hole, and designated hitter Doug Trimble launched his fifth home run of the season to deep right center to lead off the sixth inning.
The Hens, who left 12 runners on base, scored twice in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Tierno and run-scoring single by Jordan Glover. Tierno knocked in another run with a groundout in the fourth to make it 3-0 and the Hens broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning that was highlighted by Trimble's blast and Tierno's based loaded single that scored two runs.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware will continue its eight-game homestand this weekend when the Hens host Siena for a doubleheader Saturday (Apr. 23) and a single game Sunday (Apr. 24)
• With his three hits, Meeker snapped an 0-10 for skid since his return to the lineup after missing 16 games with a broken jaw vs. Bryant on Mar. 16
• The Hens are now 13-3 vs. non-league opponents at Bob Hannah Stadium this season
• Tierno extended his on-base streak to 20 straight games and is now 20 for 42 over his last 11 games
• Wilmington entered the game ranked No. 16 in NCAA II in fielding percentage (. 971) but committed three errors
