ELON, N.C. – The season came to a close Thursday for the ninth-seeded University of Delaware women's tennis team as the Blue Hens dropped a 4-1 first round match to No. 8 seed Hofstra at Elon University's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Delaware (8-10) got off to a strong start by picking up the team doubles points with wins in the first and second flights.
Freshmen Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) registered the first win of the morning in No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 triumph over Michal Kaplan and Sarah Herndon.
The top-flight pairing of sophomore Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and junior Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) clinched the doubles point by a tally of 6-4 against Sarah Bowen and Carmen Pestano.
Singles action proved to be a close and daunting task for both teams as five of the six courts were pushed to three-set matches, two of which were sent into third set tiebreakers.
The Pride (14-6) tied the match at 1-1 as Disha Yellayi posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Hall in the fifth flight.
Giulia Leone followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 No. 6 singles decision versus Delaware sophomore Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) while Bowen topped Studnicki, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the first flight to take the 3-1 advantage.
The deciding match came down to the very end as Kaplan pulled out the 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory over LaMachia in the second spot.
Freshman Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Friends) and Komer were each battling back in their respective flights as before the match came to an end.
Jaskulski trailed Herndon, 2-6, 6-4, 4-2 in No. 3 singles while Komer was in a close affair with Pestano, 3-6, 6-0, 6-6 (5-4), in the fourth flight.
“What a first-round match! Even with the clinch/clinch format, the match lasted nearly three hours. It stings to lose, especially when you're so close, but we left everything we had on the courts. We are young, but our future is bright.”
