OMAHA, Neb. -- One of the top backstroke specialists in University of Delaware men's swimming and diving history, former Blue Hen standout Tim Ware will be competing on a big stage Monday night when he takes part in the USA Olympic Trials at the Century Link Center.
A native of Doylestown, Pa. (Central Bucks South High School), Ware will be among 192 athletes competing for a spot on the 2016 Olympic Team in the 100 meter backstroke. A total of 20 preliminary heats in that event will begin Monday at 11:43 a.m. (CT) with the top 16 times advancing to the semifinals. The finals will be held Monday at approximately 6:45 p.m.
A 2015 honors graduate in marketing from Delaware, Ware will be among 1,800 swimmers competing for a maximum of 52 spots on the U.S. Olympic team that will compete in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August. The eight-day event began today (June 26) and runs through next Sunday, July 3.
Ware becomes the third Blue Hen to compete at the trials over the last five years. Former UD standouts Ross Buckwalter and Mike Wodoslawsky also took part in the 2012 Olympic Trials.
While at Delaware, Ware won the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association 100 backstroke title with a conference record time, set school records in the 50 backstroke (21.39), 100 backstroke (46.90), and 200 backstroke (1:45.6), and was an NCAA Provisional Qualifier in the 100 and 200 backstroke events. He also became the first male swimmer in UD history to advance to the finals at the USS Winter Nationals.
He posted 11 top 10 finishes at the CAA Championships during his career, including a fourth place finish in the 200 backstroke in 2015, a fifth place showing in the 200 backstroke in 2013, and sixth place finishes in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events in 2014. A Dean's List student, he also was a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Ware qualified for the trials with a top time of 57.03 (long course). David Plummer enters the competition as the top ranked swimmer with a clocking of 52.51. The world and US record is 51.94 by Aaron Peirsol in 2009.
