NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltekeplatz) came off the bench to explode for a career-high four goals Saturday afternoon as No. 14 Delaware picked up the 5-2 victory over No. rv Ohio State at Fred P. Rullo Stadium in the season lid-lifter for both squads.
The first half of play provided the majority of the offensive action for both teams as the Blue Hens held a 4-2 lead at halftime.
Redshirt junior Kayla Devlin (at left; Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) collected the first goal of the season in the eighth minute before Nauck gave the Hens (1-0) the 2-0 advantage less than two minutes later.
Casey Cole got the Buckeyes (0-1) on board just 40 seconds afterwards before Nauck responded with back-to-back goals in the 13th and 14th minutes. Maddy Humphrey tallied the final score of the first half to bring OSU within two at the break.
Nauck posted the lone tally of the second half with a penalty stroke in the 60th minute.
Junior Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) registered three saves for the Hens while senior Maura Zarkoski (Eagleville, Pa./Villa Maria) recorded a defensive save.
Rolf van de Kerkhof“There were a lot of good parts today, but also things we need to clean up. That's the joy in starting a new season. Our game plan was to start hard, go after it and hit a few hard punches. We were able to do that, which allows us to have a little bit more breathing room so to say as the game moves on. This was a great start to our 2016 season.”
Kaitlyn Zook all made their Blue Hens debut against OSU.
· Taylor Lister (at right) dished out her first assist of the season versus the Buckeyes.
· Greta Nauck previously collected a career-best three goals against Towson on Oct. 23, 2015.
· Anne Wilkinson '86 returned to her alma mater as the Ohio State head coach. A 2000 inductee into the UD Athletics Hall of Fame, Wilkinson was a dual-sport athlete for the field hockey and lacrosse teams and helped guide Delaware lacrosse to the 1983 national championship.
