NEWARK, Del. -- It took some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by the University of Delaware and two fatal miscues by James Madison in the final 50 seconds, but the Blue Hens were able to hold on for a 66-61 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory Saturday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Delaware (9-14, 2-8 CAA), which snapped a two-game losing streak, got a balanced effort with four scorers in double figures and a solid effort at the foul line where the Hens knocked down 12 of 14
shots from the charity stripe in the second half, including 7 of 8 in the final 1:09.
Freshman guard Ryan Daly scored 16 points, hit all six of his free throws down the stretch and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and sophomore forward Eric Carter (at left) put in his best performance of the season with a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds.
James Madison (6-17, 4-6 CAA), which extended its losing streak to four games, got a season-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, from Shakir Brown while Ivan Lukic came off the bench to register a career-high 17 points and Jackson Kent chipped in with 10 points.
The Dukes committed two big turnovers down the stretch that proved to be their undoing. After a Brown three-pointer with 1:22 left tied the game at 57-57, Daly came back to give Delaware a 59-57 with two free throws. JMU took over possession but Paulius Satkus turned the ball over to Anthony Mosley and the UD point guard converted the steal and layup to push the UD lead to 59-57 with 43 seconds left.
After Daly hit two more free throws with 12 seconds left to give Delaware a 64-61 lead, JMU again
had the chance to gain a share of the lead but point guard Joey McLean dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds at midcourt with six seconds left.
The Dukes then had to foul and Daly knocked down two more three throws to preserve the victory.
Delaware never trailed in the first half on the way to a 34-24 lead at the break and stayed in front for the first 10 minutes of the second half before James Madison used a 13-0, highlighted by two Brown treys, to take a 42-41 lead with 10:28.
But Delaware answered right back on a triple by Pinkard and stayed in front until JMU knotted the score at 57-57 at the 1:22 mark.
“I've been shooting my free throws better lately, and was able to knock down the two big ones tonight,” Daly said. “Eric (Carter) was awesome and established himself early, and Devonne (Pinkard) hit some big shots in the second half. We finished the game tonight, which is what we need to be able to do."
