GILBERT, Ariz. – The University of Delaware field hockey team enters this weekend's NCAA Tournament with a No. 7 ranking in the final Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Coaches Poll of the season.
The Blue Hens (15-4) received 747 points and one first place vote after claiming their fifth straight, and seventh overall, Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title with wins over Northeastern and William & Mary.
The top three remained the same as Connecticut maintained its unbeaten record at 19-0 to accumulate 1,046 points and 38 first place votes to stay at No. 1 in the poll. Duke (16-3) followed with 950 points and three first place votes for the second spot while Michigan (19-2) was third with 934 points.
The rest of the top 10 included No. 4 North Carolina (16-4), No. 5 Virginia (15-4), No. 6 Penn State (16-4), No. 8 Louisville (14-7), No. 9 Maryland (13-6) and No. 10 Northwestern (14-6).
Delaware opens the 2017 NCAA Tournament Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest against the No. 6 Nittany Lions in Storrs, Conn. The Hens handed then-No. 2 Penn State its first loss of the season by a margin of 2-0, at The Nook in September. UD is 4-3 all-time versus PSU on neutral turf. With a win, Delaware would likely face top-seeded and host Connecticut Sunday.
