NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware baseball program and head coach Jim Sherman has selected seniors Diaz Nardo, Calvin Scott and Nick Spadafino as captains for the 2018 season, Sherman announced Monday.
Nardo (Harbeson, Del./Cape Henlopen), Scott (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) and Spadafino (Dover, Del./Dover) return to a Blue Hens team that won 34 games a season ago, advancing to the program's first NCAA Regional since 2001. The Delaware trio is the first set of Delaware natives to be selected as captains since 1982 when Sherman (William Penn) and Chuck Coker (Dover) served as captains.
“I'm excited to announce our captains for the 2018 season, as all three of these guys will continue to uphold the high standards of previous Delaware baseball captains. All three players have earned the respect of both their coaches and their teammates. We look forward to another great season of Blue Hens baseball.”
One of the most consistent starting pitchers in the Colonial Athletic Association, Spadafino returns for his senior season in Newark after posting a 7-3 record a season ago. The senior pitched a team-best 76.2 innings last season and allowed just six earned runs over his final 21.2 innings pitched. Spadafino is now a two-time time selection, as he served as a captain last season.
A third-team All-CAA selection, Nardo started all 57 games for the Hens last season, hitting a team-high 16 doubles. The third baseman hit five home runs and drove in 35 runs. One of the best hitters in the CAA, Scott was named a Third Team All-CAA selection, as the St. Mark's product hit .332 last season with an on-base percentage of .436. The outfielder also hit 13 doubles and pair of triples. Delaware opens the 2018 season Feb. 16-18 at Charleston Southern University.
