Blue Hens Set To Open Home Schedule vs. Villanova, Lehigh

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team will open the home portion of its schedule this week as the Blue Hens host Villanova in a doubleheader on Tuesday and Lehigh in a single game on Wednesday.
Delaware, which is 6-12 on the season, will face the Wildcats in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, before taking on the Mountain Hawks in a 3 p.m. single game on Wednesday.
Due to last week's winter storm, the Blue Hens have not played since Mar. 10-11 when they won all four games at the UNCG Spartan Classic. Delaware posted two victories over Campbell and one each over UNC Greensboro and Winthrop at the invitational, scoring 31 runs on the weekend.
UD sophomore catcher Anna Steinmetz was named CAA Co-Player of the Week last Monday after going 8 for 12 with three runs scored, two home runs and six RBI during the tournament, while Devon Steiner hit .417 with five runs scored, two homers and five RBI.
Leanna Gearhart batted .375 and stole four bases, while her 11 steals this year rank second in the conference. Gearhart has now stolen 66 career bases, tying her for the school record along with Kim Griffin who also stole 66 bases from 1989-92.
Jordan Cargile picked up a pair of wins in the circle at the invitational, Taylor Curran earned a win and two saves, and Kat Morris notched her first career victory.
Villanova carries a 9-6 record into Tuesday's doubleheader, and the Wildcats have not played since winning three of five games at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. on Mar. 10-12.
Lauren Hanna leads Villanova with a .375 batting average and 18 hits on the year, while Nikki Alden is hitting .371 with three homers and a team-high 14 RBI. Brette Lawrence paces the Wildcats pitching staff with seven wins and a 2.15 ERA.
Lehigh is 8-14 on the year after playing its last 12 games in the state of California, including splitting four games at the Santa Clara Round Robin Tournament last weekend. Nicole Yozzo leads the Mountain Hawks with a .333 batting average, while Rachel Timberman is hitting .326 and Reva Alderman has driven home a team-best 12 runs. Christine Campbell is 5-4 with a 2.27 earned run average in the circle for Lehigh, while Emily Sorem is 2-6 with a 3.17 ERA.
Villanova leads the all-time series with Delaware, 40-21-1, although the Blue Hens won two games over the Wildcats last year at the Delaware Invitational. UD holds a 37-23-1 all-time advantage over Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks posted a 5-2 victory on March 25, 2015 in the teams' last meeting.
