NEWARK, Del. – It came down to the very last set and in the end, the Blue Hens came out victorious with the 4-3 decision over Loyola at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts Tuesday afternoon.
The Greyhounds came out strong and swept the team doubles point, but Delaware bounced back and stayed resilient in singles action.
Freshman Dominick Perez (Bethesda, Md./Gonzaga) collected the first win of the day for the Hens, his third straight on the year, with the 7-5, 6-3 victory over Matt Fitzmaurice in the sixth flight.
Junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) tied the match at 2-2 with his 7-5, 7-5 win against Brian Hoffarth in No. 2 singles before sophomore Venkatesh Ramkumar (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) followed with the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 No. 5 triumph versus C.J. Cash.
Loyola (2-4) collected the No. 3 singles win to tie the match once again while the Blue Hens (4-7) clinched in top flight play as freshman Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany) defeated Blest Jones, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
“It was a good battle today and I'm very proud of our guys for showing great character after losing the doubles point. We came out very flat today in the doubles, but we bounced back and showed tremendous heart in every singles match. This was a tight match that could have gone either way and I'm proud of how our guys showed great composure and class through the tough times.”
