BALTIMORE, Md. -- The honors continue to roll in for the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team following last week's historic victory over No. 1 ranked Rutgers.
Delaware freshman goalkeeper Matt DeLuca, who posted a career-high 19 saves as the Blue Hens defeated Rutgers 13-9 last Saturday at Delaware Stadium, has been named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association and BSN Sports National Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending March 26.
The victory marked the first-ever victory for the Blue Hens over a No. 1 ranked team in seven tries. The Scarlet Knights entered the game undefeated at 8-0, ranked No. 1 in the Maverik/Inside Lacrosse Top 20 poll, and No. 3 in the USILA Coaches Top 20 poll.
DeLuca, a goalkeeper from Farmingdale, N.Y. (Farmingdale HS), was brilliant in the nets once again for the Blue Hens and played a key part in the upset. He turned back a career-high 19 shots against the Scarlets Knights, the highest save total by a UD netminder since Tommy Scherr had 19 vs. Lehigh in 2008. H
e also had a groundball in the win. He set the tone with six saves in the first quarter and finished with five saves in the final stanza when UD held the Scarlet Knights to just two goals.
DeLuca, who is now 6-1 since taking over the starting spot in the nets, earlier in the week was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.
Delaware (7-3), which has now won six of its last seven games, will return to action Saturday when the Hens open CAA play at Massachusetts at 1 p.m. in Amherst, Mass.
Kyle Marr, a sophomore attackman from Johns Hopkins University, was named the USILA/BSN Sports Offensive Player of the Week.
