PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's track & field squad enjoyed some solid performances during the first day of the 123rd annual Penn Relays Thursday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.
Delaware student-athletes competed in four events on the day as the Blue Hens finished second in their heat of the 4 x 100 meter relay, second in their heat of the 4 x 400 meter relay, and sixth in their
heat in the distance medley relay.
Both the 4 x 100 meter and the 4 x 400 meter relay teams posted qualifying times for the ECAC section finals Friday but will not compete.
"Today was a good tune up for the conference meet next weekend," said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith. "I would like their legs to be fresh for CAA's next weekend so we won't run them in the second round."
Individually, Blue Hen junior Sarah Hillman placed 20th in the shot put with a toss of 44-feet, 3. 25-inches.
In the 4 x 100 meter relay, Delaware's foursome of Andriene Rose, Isis Pinkney, Haley Berkeley, and Tyler Jackson ran to a time of 47.21 to place second overall in their heat and 32nd out of 78 entries. Stony Brook won the heat with a time of 47.11 while the overall winner was Oregon in 43.12.
In the 4 x 400 meter relay, the Blue Hen tandem (at left, Darr. Freeland, Khoury, Pettipaw) of London Freeland, Nadia Khoury, Carly Pettipaw, and Carolyn Darr ran to a time of 3:46.93 to place second in their heat behind Villanova (3:46.12). Oregon was the overall winner with a clocking of 3:30.16.
In the distance medley relay, Delaware's team of Betsy Erlanger, Bema Amponsah, Michaela Meyer, and Liz McGroarty posted a time of 11:41.15, the third fastest time in school history. The time was good enough for sixth in the heat. The overall finish was unavailable.
Delaware will close out competition Friday with Hillman competing in the discus throw beginning at 11:30 a.m.
