LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Blue Hens snapped a four-match losing streak in outstanding fashion Wednesday afternoon as Delaware swept Rider, 7-0.
With the win, the Hens improved to 7-13 on the year while the Broncs dropped to 2-12 overall.
Delaware kicked off the afternoon by clinching the team doubles point for the second straight match.
In No. 2 doubles, junior Asdrubal Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) paired with freshman Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) for the 6-2 win before seniors Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) captured the team point with the 6-3 decision in No. 1 doubles.
Luis Marcano opened singles play with the 6-1, 6-2 victory over Matthew Begley in the third spot while classmate Sam Oberholtzer (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) posted the No. 5 6-3, 6-1 win against Griffin Clark.
Cheng followed with his fifth straight singles triumph by defeating Adam Levin in the second slot, 6-1, 6-3.
In top-flight play, Flematti cruised to the 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chris Popso before Asdrubal Marcano and freshman Scott Cameron (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial) wrapped up action with wins of their own. Asdrubal Marcano defeated Brandon Gildea, 6-3, 6-2, in the fourth spot while Cameron registered the 7-6 (6), 6-2 triumph against Jeremy Van Herwarde.
“It's nice to have so much depth on our team and to be able to call on any of our players to step up when need be. We had a great doubles showing and we were able to get fast wins to go up in singles. We continue to improve as we get ready for our weekend matches.”
